Power Rack (4-post, with J-cups, safety bars, and pull-up bar)The garage form of the smart-tier rack — a free-standing 4-post cage (the garage has the floor and ceiling height a spare room doesn't, so no folding wall rack needed). Bolt to the slab or rear-wall studs and set the safeties at depth for solo squats and presses.

Barbell & Weight Set Bundle BuilderOne-stop barbell + plate bundle (~250 lb of plates) — fits the rack's J-cups, enough weight to squat, press, row, and pull at the smart tier. When 250 lb starts feeling light (it will), the add-on button stocks heavier Olympic plates without re-buying the bar.

What to leave out, and why

Smith MachineA fixed-path bar forces unnatural joint angles and removes stabilizer activation. Your power rack handles every movement the Smith Machine does — better.

Do this insteadUse the barbell in your rack with safety bars set correctly.

Cable Machine / Functional TrainerA quality cable stack costs $800–$2,000 and eats half the garage. Skip it at the smart tier.

Build instead · $20Two DIY band anchors at different heights handle face pulls, curls, rows, and triceps pushdowns for under $20.

Pec Deck / Fly MachineLarge footprint, high cost, and a very narrow movement pattern.

Do this insteadDB flies on the bench and band crossovers (from the wall anchor) hit the same muscles with equipment you already own.

Leg PressTakes 30–40 sq ft of premium garage floor — space you need for deadlifts and carries. At the smart tier, the barbell covers more patterns.

Do this insteadBarbell squats, Bulgarian split squats, and Romanian deadlifts build more total leg mass.

Layout Guide

How to work in your space

Note 1 of 4

Anchor Before You Load

Lag the 4-post rack into rear-wall studs or bolt the feet to the slab — two bolts per upright, minimum. Set the safety bars at depth. In a garage with no spotter, those pins are the safety plan.

Note 2 of 4

The Rack Runs Everything

Squats, deadlifts, bench, rows, and overhead press all live here. Park the FID bench inside the uprights to press, pull it out for rows and incline. The optional REP dip attachment drops onto the uprights for weighted dips.

Note 3 of 4

Build Your Cable Station

Hang the DIY cable pulley tower off the rack crossmember for plate-loaded lat pulldowns, and bolt the DIY band anchor into a side-wall stud. Both retire when the all-in-one arrives at complete.

Note 4 of 4

Mat The Gym Half

About four stall mats under the rack, bench, and dumbbell zone; leave the front bare if you still park. Hang the mirror at the edge of the training zone and keep the mat center open for deadlifts.

Workout Plan

4 weeks · 5x/week
Bro Split
5 days/week
One muscle group per day, hit hard once a week: 3 working sets of 8–12 per exercise, after 2–3 ramp-up sets on the first one. Rest 2–2.5 min on compounds, ~90s on isolation; stop 1–2 reps short of failure and take the last isolation set all-out. Clear the top of the rep range on every set, then add weight. Week 4 is a deload (2 sets, well short of failure); run the block 2–3 times, adding 2.5–5 lb or a rep each round.
Push Pull Legs
6 days/week
Push / Pull / Legs twice a week, so every muscle is trained 2×. Same 3 working sets of 8–12 per exercise as the Bro Split, spread over two lighter sessions instead of one. Ramp up with 2–3 sets on the first exercise. Rest 2–2.5 min on compounds, ~90s on isolation; keep 1–2 reps in reserve on compounds, chase the pump on isolation. Week 4 is a deload; run the block 2–3 times, adding 2.5–5 lb or a rep each round.
Focus: Volume Foundation
